Where does blue light come from?

Blue light, a high-energy visible light, comes from both natural and artificial sources. Natural blue light can have some positive effects, including lifting mood and regulating circadian rhythm. However, it's the artificial blue light that causes worry.

What is blue light?

Behold the light spectrum, where wavelengths of light are measured in nanometers. Notice that blue light is the closest visible light to ultra-violet light.It ranges from about 380 to 500nm, compared to red light’s 700nm.

Put simply, it’s one of the shortest, highest-energy wavelengths on the spectrum, and accounts for an impressive one-third of all visible light.

Studies have shown that prolonged and repeated exposure to blue light can have a number of ill-effects on our bodies.In the short-term: aches, strains, pains, and lethargy in around the eye area.In the long term, there's even a chance it may accelerate macular degeneration and damage cells in the retina.That blue light from your screen messes up your sleep too - surely a case of Netflix and no-chill. It depletes the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for putting you to sleep.

All of our Ambr Eyewear blue light light glasses are available in both non-prescription and prescription versions. If you have perfect eyesight and don't require glasses to see while using a screen, then our non-prescription blue light blocking lenses are for you. To select this option, simply choose the "No Prescription" button that's located under the colour swatch.

Yes, we offer prescription blue light lenses for all our frames. Most people with a prescription will require single vision lenses, this means that there's only one power in the lens and will be used for either distance or reading vision. We also have the added options of bifocal and progressive lenses, which contain more than one field of vision in each lens (distance at the top, and reading at the bottom). Our prescription option comes with blue light filter lenses and anti-glare coating as standard.

All our lenses are made from polycarbonate. This is material preferred in modern day optics due to its high impact resistance and relatively light weight. Polycarbonate lenses can survive the impact of a steel ball travelling 160 kmph without shattering. During production, the polycarbonate is mixed with a naturally-occurring pigment that gives the lenses their blue light blocking capabilities.

Yes, all our blue light lenses are layered with an anti-reflective coating as standard. An anti-reflective coating stops distracting reflections on the surface of the lens, and help to improve visual acuity. Mistakenly, many people mix up the anti-reflective coating, which reflects light as a greenish colour, with the blue light light filter. Contrary to what some people say, a high-quality AR coating on a pair of blue light lenses will reflect green, and not blue.

Our glasses have a barely noticeable amber tint (that's where the name comes from!). In order to block blue light, it is necessary to have some sort of tint in the lens. However, our lenses have the lightest tint that's possible. The tint in our lenses will not affect colour perception and you may only notice it when you hold the lenses against a white piece of paper. This is why Ambr Eyewear lenses are preferred by those in professions that work with colour - such as videographers, photographers, designers etc.

Natural blue light from the sun has beneficial effects. It's what helps our body control our circadian rhythm, or sleep-wake cycle. Natural blue light can also help to lift alertness and raise your mood. Although there's no bad consequences that come from wearing your blue light glasses all day, we would however encourage people to expose themselves to natural blue light for stages of the day. If you find yourself indoors at a screen (or under fluorescent lighting for that matter), it might be best to wear them continuously throughout the day.

A high amount of workers report an increase in headaches and eyestrain while working under fluorescent lights. Fluorescent lighting also emits a considerable amount of blue light within the range that our blue light glasses block. Many Ambr Eyewear wearers have reported significantly higher levels of comfort whilst working under fluorescent lighting.

It has been shown beyond doubt that exposure to blue light in the evening decreases the brain's ability to produce melatonin. Melatonin is the hormone responsible for putting us to sleep. When we expose ourselves to high-energy visible light, like that from the sun, we are unintentionally tricking our body into believing that it's still daytime. Thus, we find it harder to fall asleep and are likely to have restless, disjointed sleep. That is why we strongly suggest the use of blue light blocking after sunset to maintain a healthy and regular circadian rhythm.

Yes, they should. With exposure to blue light from the screens, your eyes are being barraged by high-energy high-frequency light, which they find difficult to process for long periods of time. With the use of blue light blocking glasses, you’ll notice your eyes feel less tired at the end of the day because they don't need to work as hard. The glasses will also slightly dull the harsh light and soften the screen's effect on your eyes. Expect your eyes feel pain-free and more refreshed when you decide to put the laptop or phone away.

There are two principle occasions for when you would use our blue light glasses. Firstly, when you are about to begin a long stint (over two hours) of consistent time in front a screen, day or night. For example, if you're using a screen for 7-8 hours throughout the work day, we'd highly suggest using your blue light glasses not only to reduce digital eye-strain, but also to take preventative measures against the possibility of long-term damage. Secondly, we strongly advocate the use of blue light glasses after sunset to help promote a healthy circadian rhythm and quality sleep. Our eyes were not designed to be exposed to bright lights when it's dark, and digital devices have brought on an insomnia epidemic among many in society. Blue light glasses have been shown to counteract this and help the wearer fall asleep easier.

While there is no conclusive proof that consistent exposure to blue light damages eyes, a 2018 piece of research from the University of Toledo in the US suggests some worrying links between artificial blue light exposure and permanent eye damage. As mentioned in an early question, UV damage is cumulative and expresses itself in later life. There is no way of knowing yet what the future holds for our generation of screen addicts. That's why we feel the use of blue light blocking glasses is a good idea as a preventative measure against future damage.

Our prescription blue light lenses take three working days in production before shipping. If you require a high-index pair (extra thin for a high prescription) then this becomes 5-6 working days. Progressive lenses and bifocal lenses also take about 5-6 working days.

Yes, we have a 30-day free returns policy. If you are not entirely satisfied with your computer glasses and wish to return/exchange them, you can follow the instructions laid out on the Returns page. This policy also covers prescription glasses.

While it's not the purpose we intended for our blue light glasses, nonetheless they may help with reducing glare while driving at night. Because sunglasses aren't very practical when it's dark, drivers look for less heavily tinted alternatives to combat the glare of oncoming lights and street lights. The slight tinting of Ambr Eyewear glasses may help with this.

Our blue light glasses change the light rays that our eyes receive. They do not change any part of the eye itself. Wearing glasses that are too strong or otherwise wrong for the eyes cannot harm an adult – although it might result in a temporary headache. Wearing them consistently might result in some adjusting when they're not being worn, but this would only last a couple of minutes at most. It will not result in damage to any part of the eye.

Our Blue Light range block as much blue light as possible while maintaining a virtually clear lens. However, some people may be extra sensitive to artificial light and will require something stronger. With this extra strength though comes the necessity of a stronger tint. Our Ultra range, which you can access at the top of this page, are tinted dark yellow and block over 90% of the blue light spectrum. They are perfect for those who require strong protection and don't care as much about the cosmetic appeal of their blue light glasses.

Yes, you can. You can find our Transition range at the top of this page. We use world-renowned Transitions Xtractive lenses which block a considerable amount of blue light when clear and deactivated. When you step outside, they are triggered by UV light and darken very quickly into sunglasses.

Photophobia is triggering of migraine brought on by exposure to artificial light. A person with photophobia has a strong intolerance to such light. By blocking out the highest-energy band of light, sufferers may notice significant relief from chronic migraine. We would definitely suggest trying our blue light glasses if you are looking for a solution to photophobia.

Yes, our lenses block 100% of wavelengths up to 420 nanometres. Ultraviolet light exists between 0 and 380 nanometres, meaning you are 100% protected. UV damage to eyes is cumulative, meaning it builds up over time. The consequences of consistent UV exposure (and blue light for that matter) may only become apparent in later life. That's why we strongly encourage people to take preventative steps now to safeguard them in the years to come.
